As a member of the military community, you could be eligible for a wide range of payment options. You may also be eligible for scholarship and financial aid.

University of the Potomac offers academic programs services for active duty military servicemembers, veterans, and military spouses and dependents. UOTP students

Financing Your Education

  • Dependents’ Educational Assistance (Ch. 35) (dependents, survivors). Monthly educational benefit entitlement for dependents and survivors of veterans who are 100-percent disabled or who died of a service-connected cause or were a POW or MIA.

  • Tuition Assistance (active duty, reservists) – Tuition assistance resources specific to the major military branches and select National Guard and Reserves.
  • Vocational Rehabilitation (Ch. 31) (veterans) – Tuition and fee benefits for those with specific disability ratings by the Department of Veterans Affairs due to service-related injury.

Tuition Assistance (TA) is a benefit offered to service members to assist with the cost of tuition. Military Tuition Assistance typically covers 100 percent of tuition, up to the $250 cap per credit hour. UOTP’s undergraduate tuition rate is $240 per credit hour and the University offers some scholarships for military personnel in the graduate program. Tuition Assistance only applies to tuition; students still need to pay semester fees.

Each military branch has its own TA application form and procedures.To find out how to get started, visit your local installation education center, go online to a virtual education center, or click on the following links for each service branch:

  • UOTP does not impose a FAFSA priority application deadline, however it is recommended that students who wish to pursue federal aid submit their FAFSA by June 15 and December 15.
  • Military Tuition Assistance does not pay for fees unless a base education office or branch service portal specifies on a TA authorization form or request a willingness to do so.
  • Students will be responsible for grades that are not deemed successful. The following grades are acceptable:
    • Undergraduate: C grade or higher
    • Graduate: B grade or higher (- and + will be treated as just a letter grade).
  • Unearned TA policy: UOTP will return any unearned TA funds to the service member’s branch of service on a proportional basis through the 60 percent portion of the enrollment period for which the funds were provided. Any unearned funds returned based upon when a student stops attending. In instances when a service member stops attending due to a military service obligation, UOTP will offer a 100 percent tuition refund upon receipt of an academic petition from the service member documenting proof of the service obligation.
  • Anyone wishing to utilize TA, please speak with your Educational Services Officer (ESO) or counselor within your military service prior to enrolling.
  • Important Dates & Deadlines – Tuition assistance authorization forms must be submitted to the School Certifying Official (SCO) by the semester payment deadline each semester. Students are encouraged to submit authorization forms at least two weeks prior to the deadline to allow adequate processing time. UOTP does not impose a FAFSA priority application deadline, however it is recommended that students who wish to pursue federal aid submit their FAFSA at least two weeks prior to the payment deadline. It is normal for some FASFA applications to require additional student paperwork with the institution and early submission allows the student time to understand, collect, and submit any follow up document items to complete their application. Cost statements can be requested in the Student Financial Services Department by calling 202-274-2327 or via email- studentfinancialservices@potomac.edu.

You can use your veterans education benefits to help pay for your education at UOTP. Your eligibility depends on a number of factors.   • Military Spouse Career Advancement Accounts – The U.S. Department of Defense offers Military Spouse Career Advancement Accounts, MyCAA, a program that provides as much as $4,000 in financial assistance to eligible military spouses toward an Associate of Arts or any of our undergraduate and graduate certificates. The program is capped at $2,000 a year and is available to spouses of active-duty military personnel in pay grades E1-E5, W1-W2, and O1-O2.
  • Veterans Education Benefits for Military Spouses and Dependent Children – If you qualify for veterans education benefits as a spouse or dependent child of an active-duty servicemember or veteran, you can use those benefits to help pay for your education at UMGC. Your eligibility depends on a number of factors.

  • Chapter 35: Survivors’ and Dependents’ Educational Assistance Program (DEA)
  • University of the Potomac has well-trained and dedicated Financial Aid Administrators. The Student Financial Services office evaluates, approves, and awards financial aid to students in accordance with federal, state, and University regulations, policies, and guidelines.
  • You may be eligible for several types of financial aid that will help pay for college. You should submit a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)even if you are receiving VA educational benefits. Some GI Bill® is a registered trademark of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). Any veteran who has served at least 90 days of active duty after September 11, 2001, and received an honorable discharge is eligible to take advantage of the Post 9/11 GI Bill® is a registered trademark of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). Yellow Ribbon® Program

The Yellow Ribbon® GI Education Enhancement Program (Yellow Ribbon® Program) is a provision of the Post-9/11 Veterans Educational Assistance Act of 2008. This program allows institutions of higher learning (degree-granting institutions) in the United States to enter voluntarily into an agreement with Veterans Affairs to fund tuition expenses.  The institution can contribute up to 50% of those expenses and Veterans Affairs will match the same amount as the institution. UOTP’s Washington, DC location participates in the Yellow Ribbon Program.

Private or Foreign School: Up to $24,476.79 per academic year National Maximum.

Military Liaison

As a military student transitioning into school, you will have unique concerns and questions about specific benefits. Whether you are transitioning from the military to school for the first time or a returning student, you may have questions or concerns regarding your education benefits or an academic question. To facilitate your needs, UOTP has a dedicated team of professionals to ensure a smooth transition and answer all your questions. Our team consists of former military and civilian personnel with an understanding of military life, educational benefits, and academic support. Our military liaisons are available to aid or answer questions throughout your academic career and can play a critical factor in your college success and career advancement.

Chief Petty Officer Bannister reported to Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Illinois in September 1998 and began his career as an Electronics Technician. On shore, he completed successful tours while assigned to Commander, Strike Force Training Pacific and Commander, Pacific Fleet.

He has served in a myriad of sea duty assignments, including USS Truman (CVN 75), USS Bonhomme Richard (LHD-6), USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70), and USS Gary (FFG-51). He completed 11 shipboard deployments to the Western Pacific, Persian Gulf and Central Command in support of Operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom, disaster relief operations in Indonesia and counter-piracy operations. He has been awarded the Defense Meritorious Service Medal (two awards), Meritorious Service Medal, Navy Commendation Medal (three awards), and various other personal and unit awards.
Currently, Chief Bannister enjoys the privilege to pursue his passion in retirement of helping military and veterans achieve their goals. He is happily married with two children.

Dr. Ignatius B. (Nate) Perry Sr is the Military Academic Advisor and Adjunct Professor at the University. Dr. Perry is a retired United States Marine who served 22 ½ years in the Marine Corps. He has held multiple leadership positions in the U.S. Marines and the workforce as Manager, Director, and Operation Officer of a multi- million Dollar Company. He is currently Chief Executive Officer for Core Mission Solutions, Inc. a small federal government intelligence contracting company in Washington D.C. Dr. Perry has been working in the acquisitions and contracting field for 14 plus years and has held positions as Senior Capture Manager, Business Development Manager, Operations Officer, Deputy Program Manager and Program Manager. Dr. Perry has been an Adjunct Professor at the University of the Potomac since 2013. He has an Associates Degree in Business Administration, a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with a concentration in Acquisitions and Contract Management, and a Master of Business Administration with a concentration in Acquisitions and Contract Management.  Dr. Perry also holds a Doctorate in Business Administration with a concentration in Global Business and Leadership from and is now pursuing a Masters of Science in Information Technology with a concentration in Cyber Security.

Ciciley Allen is the Associate Director of Financial Aid and the School Certifying Official. She has a Bachelors in Business, a Master of Business Administration with a concentration in Management and is currently pursuing a Masters in Business Administration with concentration in Finance. Ms. Allen has more than 15 years experience in financial aid and 10 years experience as a military SCO. She has completed several Department of Education approved training, most recently the NASFAA Directors Training. As the Associate Director of Financial Aid and School Certifying Official, she understands the importance of serving the needs of students and remaining compliant with all regulatory agencies. She understands how the progress, conduct, registration, and attendance reporting can impact our students.
